Nas Tells His Side Of Concert Promoter's Kidnapping

Rapper opens up about Angola incident for the first time on today's 'RapFix Live' at 4 p.m. ET on MTV.com.

Musically, Nas has given so much of himself during the course of his 18-year rap career. But in the media, the Queensbridge MC is usually reserved and soft-spoken. Still, it was hard for God's Son to hold back when he was accused of skipping out on a New Year's show in Africa, which led an American concert promoter and his son to be kidnapped.

On today's (March 28) "RapFix Live," Nas finally gives his side of the story. "I didn't want to touch on it because it seemed like he was in grave danger out there," Nas said Tuesday during the interview, which will stream on MTV.com today at 4 p.m. ET.

The promoter returned home safely to New Jersey on February 19. TMZ broke the story January 3 and reported that Patrick Allocco and his son, whom he works with, were kidnapped by local Africa promoter Henrique "Riquhino" Miguel after Nas and an opening act failed to perform at a New Year's Eve concert in Angola.

Allocco's reps told TMZ that Nas and opening act Jemiah Jai were paid to perform two shows but failed to board their flights. Once Miguel realized that Nas wasn't going to perform, he sent his people to take Allocco and his son into custody at gunpoint. Nas eventually returned the $300,000 that was paid to him, and Allocco was released and allowed to return back to the U.S.

Now, Esco is ready to open up.

"Basically he was a promoter that I never worked with, and he wanted me to come to Africa for New Year's, which, for me, I thought, would be the best way to spend New Year's. ... The business wasn't handled. There was nothing sent to me, and there were no flights," he said. "By the time he did send money — he did eventually send money to me — but it was too late to go. I didn't even have a visa to get in the country. So that's canceled, the show's canceled."

Allocco, who is now contemplating litigation, has a differing account, contending that everything was in place for Nas to travel to Africa. "Nothing could be further from the truth," Allocco told MTV News of Nas' version of the story. "Nas put us in harm's way by not showing up and put my son and I at physical harm and at risk by his inaction to fly to Angola."

"That was just all wrong. Anytime I'm supposed to go to Africa, it happens," Nas said on "RapFix Live." "When people take care of business, it happens. ... You booked the flight but no return flight. I didn't have a visa, and you didn't send money till after I was supposed to jump on the plane to another country, and that's just the way it went down."

His rep confirms to E! News that the 65-year-old funnyman is now awake and resting in an Arizona hospital.

Gauge of US economy rose 0.7 percent in February

WASHINGTON (AP) ? A measure of future U.S. economic activity rose in February for the fifth straight month, fresh evidence that the economy is gaining momentum.

The Conference Board says its index of leading economic indicators rose 0.7 percent in February, after a 0.2 percent increase in January.

The measure of leading indicators is designed to anticipate economic conditions three to six months out. Its steady rise has coincided with other positive data that suggest the recovery is picking up ? including the best job growth in two years.

Most of the data had been previously released in separate reports.

The report "suggests that progress on jobs, output, and incomes may continue through the summer months, if not beyond," said Ken Goldstein, an economist at the Conference Board, a business research group.

Eight of the ten indicators tracked by the board increased last month, while only two fell. The largest contributors to the growth of the index were: declining applications for unemployment benefits, the spread between short-term and long-term interest rates and rising stock prices.

Rising building permits, average weekly hours worked in manufacturing, a credit index and two measures of manufacturing orders also pushed up the index.

Weekly applications for unemployment benefits fell last week to a four-year low, the Labor Department said in a separate report Thursday.

The two indicators that held back the index were a drop in consumer expectations and a decline in new orders for factory goods in a survey of purchasing managers.

A separate index measuring current business conditions rose for the third straight month, the board said.

Mark your calendars, Canadian fans. The UFC announced today they will visit the home and native land of welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre three times in the remainder of 2012.

They will start in Calgary on July 21, where Jose Aldo will fight a yet-to-be-named fighter. After that, it's UFC 152 in Toronto Sept. 22, and UFC 154 in Montreal Nov. 17. St. Pierre, who was present at the press conference, announced the Montreal date.

GSP also gave an update on his health, saying he is progressing smoothly and is hoping to be back by November.

"When you get an injury like I have and you're off for a long period of time, the only thing you wish is to get back fast as possible," he said. "I don't know if it will be in the U.S. or Canada, but I wish and I pray that I have a chance to perform in 2012. No matter where it will be, I want to come back and fight in 2012."

St. Pierre is a native of Montreal, and has enjoyed great success when fighting in front of the rabid home crowd Canada can provide. His last two fights were won in Canada, and he exacted revenge on Matt Serra, one of the few men to beat him, in Montreal.

Though he isn't likely to rush his recovery from an ACL tear, he also has plenty of motivation to be ready to go on Nov. 17.

Berkeley Lab researchers show the way forward for improving organic and molecular electronic devices

Future prospects for superior new organic electronic devices are brighter now thanks to a new study by researchers with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)'s Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab). Working at the Lab's Molecular Foundry, a DOE nanoscience center, the team has provided the first experimental determination of the pathways by which electrical charge is transported from molecule-to-molecule in an organic thin film. Their results also show how such organic films can be chemically modified to improve conductance.

"We have shown that when the molecules in organic thin films are aligned in particular directions, there is much better conductance," says Miquel Salmeron, a leading authority on nanoscale surface imaging who directs Berkeley Lab's Materials Sciences Division and who led this study. "Chemists already know how to fabricate organic thin films in a way that can achieve such an alignment, which means they should be able to use the information provided by our methodology to determine the molecular alignment and its role on charge transport across and along the molecules. This will help improve the performances of future organic electronic devices."

Salmeron and Shaul Aloni, also of the Materials Sciences Division, are the corresponding authors of a paper in the journal Nano Letters that describes this work. The paper is titled "Electron Microscopy Reveals Structure and Morphology of One Molecule Thin Organic Films." Other co-authors were Virginia Altoe, Florent Martin and Allard Katan.

Organic electronics, also known as plastic or polymer electronics, are devices that utilize carbon-based molecules as conductors rather than metals or semiconductors. They are prized for their low costs, light weight and rubbery flexibility. Organic electronics are also expected to play a big role in molecular computing, but to date their use has been hampered by low electrical conductance in comparison to metals and semiconductors.

"Chemists and engineers have been using their intuition and trial-and-error testing to make progress in the field but at some point you hit a wall unless you understand what is going on at the molecular level, for example, how electrons or holes flow through or across molecules, how the charge transport depends on the structure of the organic layers and the orientation of the molecules, and how the charge transport responds to mechanical forces and chemical inputs," Salmeron says. "With our experimental results, we have shown that we can now provide answers for these questions."

In this study, Salmeron and his colleagues used electron diffraction patterns to map the crystal structures of molecular films made from monolayers of short versions of commonly used polymers containing long chains of thiophene units. They focused specifically on pentathiophene butyric acid (5TBA) and two of its derivatives (D5TBA and DH5TBA) that were induced to self-assemble on various electron-transparent substrates.

Pentathiophenes - molecules containing a ring of four carbon and one sulfur atoms - are members of a well-studied and promising family of organic semiconductors.

Obtaining structural crystallographic maps of monolayer organic films using electron beams posed a major challenge, as Aloni explains.

"These organic molecules are extremely sensitive to high energy electrons," he says. "When you shoot a beam of high energy electrons through the film it immediately affects the molecules. Within few seconds we no longer see the signature intermolecular alignment of the diffraction pattern. Despite this, when applied correctly, electron microscopy becomes essential tool that can provide unique information on organic samples."

Salmeron, Aloni and their colleagues overcame the challenge through the combination of a unique strategy they developed and a transmission electron microscope (TEM) at the Molecular Foundry's Imaging and Manipulation of Nanostructures Facility. Electron diffraction patterns were collected as a parallel electron beam was scanned over the film, then analyzed by computer to generate structural crystallographic maps.

"These maps contain uncompromised information of the size, symmetry and orientation of the unit cell, the orientation and structure of the domains, the degree of crystallinity, and any variations on the micrometer scale," says first author Altoe. "Such data are crucial to understanding the structure and electrical transport properties of the organic films, and allow us to track small changes driven by chemical modifications of the support films."

In their paper, the authors acknowledge that to gain structural information they had to sacrifice some resolution.

"The achievable resolution of the structural map is a compromise between sample radiation hardness, detector sensitivity and noise, and data acquisition rate," Salmeron says. "To keep the dose of high energy electrons at a level the monolayer film could support and still be able to collect valuable information about its structure, we had to spread the beam to a 90 nanometer diameter. However a fast and direct control of the beam position combined with the use of fast and ultrasensitive detectors should allow for the use of smaller beams with a higher electron flux, resulting in a better than 10 nanometer resolution."

While the combination of organic molecular films and substrates in this study conduct electrical current via electron holes (positively-charged energy spaces), Salmeron and his colleagues say their structural mapping can also be applied to materials whose conductance is electron-based.

"We expect our methodology to have widespread applications in materials research," Salmeron says.
