Elizabeth Warren's biggest whopper of them all - Le?gal In?sur?rec?tion

There is something frighteningly Obama-like in Elizabeth Warren?s self-descriptions.? Warren paints a personal?narrative of rising from poverty and being the descendant of the?brutalized Cherokee tribe, when in reality neither was true (and irony of ironies, she?s the descendant of someone who likely brutalized the Cherokee).

Her academic work carried forward the victim narrative, as she misleadingly portrayed medical expenses as the primary cause of personal bankruptcy, and used innovative number crunching to portray a ?two income trap? which, using a fair analysis of the numbers, actually pointed to marginal tax rates not the evil banks and credit card companies?as the primary culprit.

Yet The Boston Herald has stumbled upon what may be Warren?s biggest whopper of all, the claim that she was the first woman in the history of New Jersey to sit for the Bar exam while a nursing mother.? Via The Boston Herald?(emphasis mine):

Warren, who had no public events yesterday, again refused an interview request from the Herald, responding to questions instead through a spokeswoman by email. Meanwhile, campaign officials scrambled to address another claim Warren?s made about her life?s story.

?I was the first nursing mother to take a bar exam in the state of New Jersey,? Warren told an audience at the Chicago Humanities Festival in 2011, in a video posted on the CHF website. When asked how Warren knows that, her campaign said: ?Elizabeth was making a point about the very serious challenges she faced as a working mom ? from taking an all-day bar exam when she was still breast-feeding, to finding work as a lawyer that would accommodate a mom with two small children.?

Winnie Comfort of the New Jersey Judiciary, which administers that state?s bar exam, said there?s no way to verify Warren?s claim. Comfort said women have been taking the New Jersey bar exam since 1895, but she?s not aware their nursing habits were ever tracked.

(video added)

Of course no one tracks whether women taking the Bar are nursing.? Who would track such a thing?

Warren just pulled this out of her bag of victim lines.

It is classic Warren, an unverifiable and unrefutable claim in which the truth doesn?t matter, only whether the statement serves a political purpose.

Related: Hundreds of Cherokees form new group to challenge Elizabeth Warren

Update:? Alana Goodman at Commentary sees the point:

On it?s face, Warren?s comments seem to be silly but harmless self-congratulation, and that?s how a lot of voters will probably see it. But it does speak to a pattern of exaggerating and stretching biographical details. It?s not just the substance of Warren?s claims that?s troubling, but the habit.

Additional Update: There has been some suggestion that Warren was just joking around when she made the bizarre statement. There is no way Warren was joking around. In the morning I?ll post a longer clip in which it will be clear that Warren?s statement about taking the Bar was just one in a long line of gender-based obstacles Warren was recounting to the audience.

5-31-2012: Here?s a longer version, the remarks come just after the 2:00 mark?(the full 1 hour video is here):

Excess Baggage: Turning Lurking Themes into Short Stories

I?d just finished writing the first draft of yet another novel that seemed to have wandered off in several directions when I made an important discovery. I was trying to work out (in retrospect) what my theme was, and so got out my old creative writing coursework books (this was pre-Google).

As I checked through my manuscript for any inkling of the theme, I realised what I?d done: I tried to fit every single thing I wanted to say about everything (except for the stuff I?d written about in a previous novel) into this one book. And because I hadn?t planned on this particular book being very long or meaty, it really suffered from the lack of focus.

I opened a sticky, peeling binder and found a yellowed sheet of paper with some old notes that jumped out at me:

Determine your theme for your story ? one theme per story [double underlined]. New theme, new story. (Complementary subthemes are okay.)

Protagonist is ?pro?-theme vs ?anti? Antagonist.

Every additional (unrelated) theme you throw into the mix dilutes the power of that first theme - the one that made you want to write the story in the first place.

I listed all those extra themes I?d found in my novel and realised I was looking at a list of potential stories. Some of these themes that meant so much to me were strong enough to explore in future novels, but many of them were narrow and specific: ideal for short stories.

What about you? Have you considered writing a list of themes that speak to you and deliberately writing one story to a theme? Or do your themes tend to hijack your writing?

(AP) ? When the gunmen began to slaughter his family, 11-year-old Ali el-Sayed says he fell to the floor of his home, soaking his clothes with his brother's blood to fool the killers into thinking he was already dead.

The Syrian boy tried to stop himself from trembling, even as the gunmen, with long beards and shaved heads, killed his parents and all four of his siblings, one by one.

The youngest to die was Ali's brother, 6-year-old Nader. His small body bore two bullet holes ? one in his head, another in his back.

"I put my brother's blood all over me and acted like I was dead," Ali told The Associated Press over Skype on Wednesday, his raspy voice steady and matter-of-fact, five days after the killing spree that left him both an orphan and an only child.

Ali is one of the few survivors of a weekend massacre in Houla, a collection of poor farming villages and olive groves in Syria's central Homs province. More than 100 people were killed, many of them women and children who were shot or stabbed in their houses.

The killings brought immediate, worldwide condemnation of President Bashar Assad, who has unleashed a violent crackdown on an uprising that began in March 2011. Activists say as many as 13,000 people have been killed since the revolt began.

U.N. investigators and witnesses blame at least some of the Houla killings on shadowy gunmen known as shabiha who operate on behalf of Assad's government.

Recruited from the ranks of Assad's Alawite religious community, the militiamen enable the government to distance itself from direct responsibility for the execution-style killings, torture and revenge attacks that have become hallmarks of the shabiha.

In many ways, the shabiha are more terrifying than the army and security forces, whose tactics include shelling residential neighborhoods and firing on protesters. The swaggering gunmen are deployed specifically to brutalize and intimidate Assad's opponents.

Activists who helped collect the dead in the aftermath of the Houla massacre described dismembered bodies in the streets, and row upon row of corpses shrouded in blankets.

"When we arrived on the scene we started seeing the scale of the massacre," said Ahmad al-Qassem, a 35-year-old activist. "I saw a kid with his brains spilling out, another child who was no more than 1 year old who was stabbed in the head. The smell of death was overpowering."

The regime denies any responsibility for the Houla killings, blaming them on terrorists. And even if the shabiha are responsible for the killings, there is no clear evidence that the regime directly ordered the massacre in a country spiraling toward civil war.

As witness accounts begin to leak out, it remains to be seen what, exactly, prompted the massacre. Although the Syrian uprising has been among the deadliest of the Arab Spring, the killings in Houla stand out for their sheer brutality and ruthlessness.

According to the U.N., which is investigating the attack, most of the victims were shot at close range, as were Ali's parents and siblings. The attackers appeared to be targeting the most vulnerable people, such as children and the elderly, to terrorize the population.

This type of massacre ? even more than the shelling and mortar attacks that have become daily occurrences in the uprising ? is a sign of a new level of violence. By most accounts, the gunmen descended on Houla from an arc of nearby villages, making the deaths all the more horrifying because the victims could have known their attackers.

According to activists in the area, the massacre came after the army pounded the villages with artillery and clashed with local rebels following anti-regime protests. Several demonstrators were killed, and the rebels were forced to withdraw. The pro-regime gunmen later stormed in, doing the bulk of the killing.

Syrian activist Maysara Hilaoui said he was at home when the massacre in Houla began. He said there were two waves of violence, one starting at 5 p.m. Friday and a second at 4 a.m. Saturday.

"The shabiha took advantage of the withdrawal of rebel fighters," he said. "They started entering homes and killing the young as well as the old."

Ali, the 11-year-old, said his mother began weeping the moment about 11 gunmen entered the family home in the middle of the night after arriving in a military armored vehicle and a bus. The men led Ali's father and oldest brother outside.

"My mother started screaming 'Why did you take them? Why did you take them?'" Ali said.

Soon afterward, he said, the gunmen killed Ali's entire family.

As Ali huddled with his youngest siblings, a man in civilian clothes took Ali's mother to the bedroom and shot her five times in the head and neck.

"Then he left the bedroom. He used his flashlight to see in front of him," Ali said. "When he saw my sister Rasha, he shot her in the head while she was in the hallway."

Ali had been hiding near his brothers Nader, 6, and Aden, 8. The gunmen shot both of them, killing them instantly. He then fired at Ali but missed.

"I was terrified," Ali said, speaking from Houla, where relatives have taken him in. "My whole body was trembling."

Ali is among the few survivors of the massacre, although it was impossible to independently corroborate his story. The AP contacted him through anti-regime activists in Houla who arranged for an interview with the child over Skype.

The violence had haunting sectarian overtones, according to witness accounts. The victims lived in the Houla area's Sunni Muslim villages, but the shabiha forces came from a nearby area populated by Alawites, an offshoot of Shiite Islam.

Most shabiha belong to the Alawite sect ? like the Assad family and the ruling elite. This ensures the loyalty of the gunmen to the regime, because they fear they would be persecuted if the Sunni majority gains the upper hand.

Sunnis make up most of Syria's 22 million people, as well as the backbone of the opposition. The opposition insists the movement is entirely secular.

It was not possible to reach residents of the Alawite villages on Wednesday. Communications with much of the area have been cut off, and many residents have fled.

Al-Qassem, the activist who helped gather corpses in Houla, said the uprising has unleashed deep tensions between Sunnis and Alawites.

"Of course the regime worked hard to create an atmosphere of fear among Alawites," said al-Qassem, who is from the Houla area, although not one of the villages that came under attack over the weekend. "There is a deep-seated hatred. The regime has given Alawites the illusion that the end of the regime will spell the end of their villages and lives."

He said the army has been pouring weapons into the Alawite areas.

"Every house in each of those Alawite villages has automatic rifles. The army has armed these villages, each home according to the number of people who live there," he said, "whereas in Houla, which has a population of 120,000, you can only find 500 0r 600 armed people. There is an imbalance."

Days after the attack, many victims remain missing.

Ali can describe the attack on his family. But al-Qassem said the full story of the massacre may never emerge.

"There are no eyewitnesses of the massacre," he said. "The eyewitnesses are all dead."

Genetic variant increases risk of heart rhythm dysfunction, sudden death

ScienceDaily (May 30, 2012) ? Cardiovascular researchers at the University of Cincinnati have identified a genetic variant in a cardiac protein that can be linked to heart rhythm dysfunction.

This is the first genetic variant in a calcium-binding protein (histidine-rich calcium binding protein) found to be associated with ventricular arrhythmias and sudden cardiac death in dilated cardiomyopathy patients, opening up new possibilities for treatment.

Dilated cardiomyopathy is a condition in which the heart becomes weakened and enlarged and cannot pump blood efficiently.

These findings are being presented for the first time at the International Society of Heart Research's Pathology and Treatment of Heart Failure meeting in Banff, Alberta, held May 27 through May 31, 2012.

The team led by Vivek Singh, PhD, a research scientist under the direction of Litsa Kranias, PhD, in the department of pharmacology and cell biophysics at UC, says that sudden cardiac death is a risk for patients with heart failure who are carriers of this variant in the histidine-rich calcium-binding protein because the calcium inside their heart cells is not properly controlled, possibly leading to the development of arrhythmias.

"The histidine-rich calcium-binding protein (HRC) is a regulator of calcium uptake and release in the sarcoplasmic reticulum, a network of tubes and sacs in heart muscle fibers that plays an important role in heart contraction and relaxation by releasing and storing calcium ions," Singh says.

"Recently, our group at UC and Athens, Greece, identified a genetic variant in HRC, named Ser96Ala, which showed a significant association with worsening ventricular arrhythmias and sudden cardiac death in a group of patients with idiopathic dilated cardiomyopathy. In this study, our team characterized the mechanisms and pathways that link the HRC variant with arrhythmias causing sudden death."

Researchers first generated animal models with cardiac-specific expression of the human normal (S96S) or altered (A96A) HRC.

"Unexpectedly, we found that contractility of heart cells significantly decreased with disturbed calcium regulation in A96A hearts when compared with S96S hearts," Singh says. "In addition, A96A heart cells showed more arrhythmic behavior under stress conditions."

Singh says this data could eventually provide new insights into pathways that control calcium regulation, leading to the development of new clinical interventions.

"Our results showed that the human HRC mutant model displayed altered intracellular calcium (Ca2+) handling, associated with slowed Ca2+ uptake and increased Ca2+ leak, which may promote arrhythmias under stress," Singh says. "These new findings are important because we can use this information to help develop new methods of screening human patients and preventing arrhythmia development in the carriers."

This study was funded by an American Heart Association Fellowship Award and the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) of the National Institutes of Health.

Common Painkillers May Help Prevent Skin Cancer: Study

TUESDAY, May 29 (HealthDay News) -- Taking nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) -- which include medicine cabinet staples such as aspirin, Motrin and Aleve -- appears to significantly lower the risk for developing several major forms of skin cancer, a new Danish study reveals.

What's more, the apparent protective impact of both prescription and nonprescription NSAIDs on skin cancer risk seems to be stronger the longer someone takes them.

Over-the-counter NSAIDs are used to control pain, fever and swelling. NSAIDs also include prescription medicines called COX-2 enzyme inhibitors, such as Celebrex (celecoxib).

"Our study showed that users of common painkillers, known as NSAIDs, have a lower risk of the three major types of skin cancer, [including] malignant melanoma, basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma," said study lead author, Sigrun Alba Johannesdottir, at the department of clinical epidemiology at Aarhus University Hospital in Aarhus, Denmark.

"The greatest effect," she noted, "was found for squamous cell carcinomas and malignant melanoma, especially when [these painkillers were] taken frequently and over a long time period."

The study appears in the May 29 online issue of the journal Cancer.

The authors noted that prior work supported the notion that NSAIDs may offer some measure of protection against cancer (most notably colorectal cancer), by specifically impeding the cancer-causing activities of COX-2 (cyclooxygenase) enzymes.

However, the team suggested that past investigations into how NSAIDs may affect skin cancer risk, in particular, had key design problems that undercut efforts to nail down any NSAID-skin cancer connection.

For the new study, the researchers analyzed prescription databases and health information registries including the Danish Cancer Registry and the Danish Civil Registration System.

The team focused on diagnostic and death records concerning nearly 2,000 cases of squamous cell carcinoma, about 13,300 cases of basal cell carcinoma and nearly 3,250 cases of malignant melanoma diagnosed between 1991 and 2009 when the patients were at least 20 years old.

In turn, prescription histories were gathered for both the cancer patient group and almost 179,000 healthy Danes. Records covered the use of both low- and high-dose aspirin (ranging from 75 milligrams to 500 milligrams), so-called "nonselective" NSAIDs (such as ibuprofen [Advil] and naproxen [Aleve], and both older and newer types of COX-2 inhibitors. Researchers noted the number of prescriptions issued per patient and their length of use, with short-term use defined as fewer than seven years.

The result: The relative risk for squamous cell carcinoma was found to have dropped by 15 percent among those Danes who had filled more than two NSAID prescriptions, compared to those who had filled two or less.

Similarly, malignant melanoma risk fell by nearly as much (13 percent) among those filling more than two NSAID prescriptions.

However, the same dynamic was generally not seen with regards to basal cell carcinoma. But taking NSAIDs for long periods of time, and at relatively high doses, was associated with a reduced risk (between 15 and 21 percent), specifically for basal cell cases that manifested in skin regions that typically experience relatively little sun exposure (areas other than the neck or head).

On that front, long-term users and those who took NSAIDs at relatively higher doses appeared to benefit from the strongest protective effect, suggesting that when it comes to skin cancer risk reduction, more NSAID use is better.

The researchers pointed out that the NSAID-cancer connection could be affected by a range of lifestyle factors they did not account for, such as an individual's specific skin type or sun exposure patterns.

But Johannesdottir added that "we hope that our finding will inspire more research on skin cancer prevention. Also, the potential cancer-protective effect should be taken into account when discussing benefits and harms of NSAID use," she noted.

However, "other studies need to detail the association further and to examine benefits versus risks," she cautioned. "Meanwhile, the most important prevention against skin cancer remains sun protection."

Meanwhile, Dr. William Ting, a private practice dermatologist in San Ramon, Calif., praised the study despite agreeing that many factors are at play when it comes to skin cancer formation.

"Now we have a better understanding that inflammation also plays a significant role in cancer formation and even skin cancers," he said.

And, "this exciting article gives physicians and consumers a relatively simple way of diminishing one's risk of skin cancer by doing what most of us are doing already for heart health," Ting added. Ting also advised that people consult with their doctor before starting on any blood thinner.

While the study found an association between skin cancer risk and NSAIDs, it did not prove a cause-and-effect relationship.

Rutherford Dental Implants: Offering Comprehensive Solutions

Rutherford dental implants offer patients presenting with single and multiple missing teeth a comprehensive and long-term tooth replacement solution. Our teeth, as strong and resilient as they may seem to us, are vulnerable to general wear-and-tear, decay, dental caries and of course, accidental trauma. Consequently, as we age (although trauma received to the face and mouth is not age-discriminating), we may find that we start losing some of our original adult teeth. Now, we need not think long and hard about the impacts missing teeth have upon the aesthetics of the smile, not to mention the overall functionality of the oral cavity as a tool for chewing and articulation in speech. It can be socially crippling. Not only are you painfully aware that you have a ?gappy? smile, but struggling to eat and speak properly also has severe impacts upon your confidence and self-esteem.

The most important advancement dental science has made in recent decades is Rutherford dental implants, which are capable of completely restoring oral aesthetics and functionality!

Rutherford Dental Implants: How They Work

Rutherford dental implants are artificial ?tooth roots? made from the incredibly strong, durable, non-corrosive and lightweight metal, titanium. The choice of this metal in dental implantology dates back to pioneering work done by Swedish professor and orthopedic surgeon Per-Ingvar Br?nemark, who found that titanium displays the unique property of ?osseointegration?. This is the process whereby a strong biological bond with bone is established, thus enabling Rutherford dental implants to remain ?anchored? in the bone of the jaw without the support of surrounding teeth and gums. This finding completely revolutionized the field of both medical and dental science as it essentially enabled surgeons and implantologists to repair and replace bones and joints (and of course, teeth) in the human body. So, the conception of Rutherford dental implants in the early 1950?s led to massive technological and scientific developments in subsequent decades to the point we are now; capable of replacing single and multiple missing teeth, even in one day:

  • Rutherford dental implants function much like the tooth/teeth they are replacing so that you may return to your normal eating habits once healing has properly taken place. They facilitate a much stronger bite force than traditional tooth replacement technology, such as dentures.
  • Rutherford dental implants are virtually indistinguishable from the tooth/teeth they are replacing: One of the main reasons patients seek out Rutherford dental implants is to restore the aesthetics of their once full and beautiful smiles! As a result, a great amount of precision, effort and time goes into the fabrication of each implant so that it not only fits snugly in the jaw bone, but it is also virtually indistinguishable from the tooth it is replacing.
  • Rutherford dental implants feel similar to natural healthy teeth: after healing, typically there is absolutely no pain or discomfort in the mouth. Furthermore, being anchored in the jaw allows them to feel as secure as their original tooth/teeth when they were in a healthy condition.

A Final Note?

Rutherford dental implants offer patients a long-term solution to single and multiple missing teeth that, if looked after, can last as long as 20, 30 years or more! Don?t opt for inferior dental technology when a much improved quality of life is afforded by these ingenious dental devices.

Loyola (Md.) beats Maryland 9-3 for lacrosse title

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) ? Top-seeded Loyola of Maryland beat Maryland 9-3 Monday to win the NCAA men's lacrosse title behind Eric Lusby's four goals. Lusby set a record with 17 goals in the tournament.

The Greyhounds captured their first national lacrosse championship and finished the season at 18-1. Maryland (12-6) lost the title game for the second straight year.

Chris Layne added three assists for the Greyhounds, whose only loss this season was to Johns Hopkins in overtime on April 28.

The two Maryland schools are separated by about 30 miles, but it was only their 21st meeting and first since the Terrapins' 19-8 victory in the 1998 national semifinals.

(AP) ? The Vatican confirmed on Saturday that the pope's butler has been arrested in its embarrassing leaks scandal, adding a Hollywood twist to a sordid tale of power struggles, intrigue and corruption in the highest levels of Catholic Church governance.

Paolo Gabriele, a layman and member of the papal household, was arrested Wednesday after secret documents were found in his Vatican City apartment and was continuing to be held Saturday, Vatican spokesman the Rev. Federico Lombardi said in a statement.

Gabriele is often seen by Pope Benedict XVI's side in public, riding in the front seat of his open-air jeep during Wednesday general audiences or shielding the pontiff from the rain. He has been the pope's personal butler since 2006, one of the few members of the small papal household that also includes the pontiff's private secretaries and four consecrated women who care for the papal apartment.

His arrest followed another stunning development at the Vatican this week, the ouster of the president of the Vatican bank, Ettore Gotti Tedeschi, by his board. Sources close to the investigation said he, too, was found to have leaked documents, though the official reason for his ouster was that he simply failed to do his job.

The "Vatileaks" scandal has seriously embarrassed the Vatican at a time during which it is trying to show the world financial community that it has turned a page and shed its reputation as a scandal plagued tax haven.

Vatican documents leaked to the press in recent months have undermined that effort, alleging corruption in Vatican finance as well as internal bickering over the Holy See's efforts to show more transparency in its financial operations. But perhaps most critically, the leaks have seemed aimed at one main goal: to discredit Pope Benedict XVI's No. 2, Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, the Vatican secretary of state.

The scandal took on even greater weight last week with the publication of "His Holiness," a book which reproduced confidential letters and memos to and from Benedict and his personal secretary. The Vatican called the book "criminal" and vowed to take legal action against the author, publisher, and whoever leaked the documents.

The Vatican had already warned of legal action against the author, Italian journalist Gianluigi Nuzzi, after he broadcast letters in January from the former No. 2 Vatican administrator to the pope in which he begged not to be transferred for having exposed alleged corruption that cost the Holy See millions of euros in higher contract prices. The prelate, Monsignor Carlo Maria Vigano, is now the Vatican's U.S. ambassador.

Nuzzi, author of "Vatican SpA," a 2009 volume laying out shady dealings of the Vatican bank based on leaked documents, said he was approached by sources inside the Vatican with the trove of new documents, most of them of fairly recent vintage and many of them painting Bertone in a negative light.

Bertone, 77, had no diplomatic experience when, after Benedict's election, he took over the high-profile job as the main administrator of the Vatican and its external relations. He had long been Benedict's loyal deputy as a canon lawyer at the Vatican's orthodoxy office.

But he has been blamed for a series of gaffes that have plagued Benedict's papacy and, according to the leaked documents, generated a not inconsiderable amount of ill will directed at him from other Vatican officials.

"For some time and in various parts of the church, criticism even by the faithful has been growing about the lack of coordination and confusion that reign at its center," Cardinal Paolo Sardi, the former No. 2 official in the Vatican secretariat of state, wrote to the pope in 2009, according to the letter reproduced in "His Holiness."

At a news conference this week, Nuzzi defended the publication of the book and said he wasn't afraid of Vatican retaliation. In fact, he even taunted Vatican prosecutors to seek help from Italian magistrates to investigate the case, charging that it would be a remarkable turnaround, given that the Vatican has been less than helpful in the past when Italian prosecutors came asking for information for their investigations.

He praised his sources ? and said there were several ? in his acknowledgments, writing: "They risked their jobs, loves, lives to entrust their big and little secrets."

Nuzzi had no comment Saturday about the arrest.

Lombardi said Saturday the arrest of Gabriele was a sad development for all Vatican staff. "Everyone knows him in the Vatican, and there's certainly surprise and pain, and great affection for his beloved family," Lombardi said.

Lombardi said Gabriele had met with his two lawyers and that the Vatican judicial system was taking its investigative course. He hasn't been indicted.

The Vatican has taken the leaks very seriously, with Benedict appointing a commission of cardinals to investigate. Vatican gendarmes as well as prosecutors are also investigating the sources of the leaks.

Inhabitat's Week in Green: Jake Dyson's lamp, wooden light bulbs and weed-killing lasers

Each week our friends at Inhabitat recap the week's most interesting green developments and clean tech news for us -- it's the Week in Green.

wooden light bulb

This week Inhabitat has been reporting live from New York Design Week, where we've witnessed countless innovative green designs from around the world. To kick things off, we were pretty impressed with this desk lamp designed by Jake Dyson (son of the vacuum god) that extends the life of its LED bulbs by a whopping 37 years. Also in the category of "bright shiny things we love" is QisDesign's Aurelia lamp, which bears a striking resemblance to a glowing jellyfish. We were also dazzled by UM Project's collection of retro, robot-inspired lamps, Light & Contrast's cute LED flower lights, and we were absolutely floored by Alessandro Jordão's larger-than-life LEGO chair. Can't get enough of NY Design Week? Check out all of our favorite green designs from this year's shows.

Continuing with the topic of innovative green lighting technology, artist Ryosuke Fukusada has created the impossible: a glowing wooden light bulb. Confused? The light was created using a technique called Rokuro, and it consists of an LED light bulb wrapped with a very thin layer of wood. When the bulb is turned on, it illuminates the grain of the wood. As Fukusada's creation demonstrates, LED lighting technology has taken some incredible strides recently, and we took some time to round-up 24 of our all-time favorite green lamps that look great with LED bulbs.

Setting Up Your Small Business Accounting Software in 7 Easy Steps

A favourite business quote of mine is: ?Profit is not just the money you make, it?s the money that you track and keep!? As a small business owner, you know how important it is to keep up with your finances, but you also know how important your finances are to your success. When you choose the best small business accounting software designed specifically for the needs of you and your company, you can save time and money in the long run by taking just a few hours setting up your software correctly the first time. You will especially appreciate that Kashoo Small Business Accounting is also an app that is a fully-functional double-entry accounting program that also follows all of the rules of GAAP (generally accepted accounting principles). Here are the first seven steps you should take:

  1. Ensure that your small business accounting software has a comprehensive, yet easy-to-understand setup wizard for starting the setup process.
  2. Add your users and authorize all of your accounts with the proper access codes and passwords.
  3. Set up your sales and other taxes according to your taxing jurisdiction.
  4. Complete any customization of your forms.
  5. Link your software to any third-party applications and online banking applications you will be using.
  6. Import your financial data; setup the auto-import function.
  7. Familiarize yourself with the Knowledge Base support topics.

Once your online accounting software is set up, you can start keeping track of your finances immediately. With regular use, you will of course continue to tweak and adjust as necessary, but the complete initial setup will be the foundation of your newfound bookkeeping and accounting software.

Facebook launches iPhone camera app

20 hrs.

Facebook's rocky initial public offering hasn't stopped life at the world's biggest online social network. On Thursday, the company unveiled a camera app for the iPhone.

The app can be downloaded from Apple's App Store and works like most other camera applications for smart phones.?

To take a photo, you tap a camera icon in the upper left corner of your screen, aim and shoot. You can then add filters, crop or tilt your photo, and share it on Facebook.?

The new app is similar to Instagram, the photo-sharing app Facebook is in the process of buying for $1 billion. The acquisition, however, has not yet been completed, and Instagram's employees did not work on the photo app. Facebook has said it expects the Instagram acquisition to close sometime this year.

Facebook didn't give details on when it might release a version of the app for phones that run on Google's Android operating system. In a statement, Facebook said it is "carefully looking at what might make for a good Facebook photos experience across Android devices."?

SanDisk Ultra 32GB Flash Drive

Flash drives have become as ubiquitous as cell phones, and the large number of them out in the wild has caused most distinguishing characteristics to melt away. This is certainly true of the SanDisk Ultra (32GB), which boasts only average features and durability along with a decent capacity and an attractive, svelte design. Although it doesn't protect your data with government-grade security like the Editors' Choice Kingston DataTraveler Locker+ (8GB, $14 street, 4 stars), considering what this USB 2.0?only does offer, it's reasonably priced at $84.99 direct, although other capacities of 8GB ($32.99 direct), 16GB ($54.99 direct), and 64GB ($144.99 direct) are available as well.

Design
The SanDisk Ultra bears a striking resemblance to a finger, specifically one severed at the second joint, a similarity reinforced by the underside of the front, which sports the same sloped concavity as a fingertip while sitting directly beneath what looks like a fingernail. It also doesn't help that, in keeping with the red-black color scheme of the flash drive, the retractable USB plug on the back of the drive (i.e., the severed section) sports a crimson flourish. (I don't have a macabre obsession with limbs, honest.)

Body parts aside, the retractable USB plug (which also flashes when in use) is a plus as it lets you carry around the drive without worrying about losing a protective cap. At the same time, however, you can't simply toss the SanDisk Ultra into your bag. Unlike the Corsair Flash Voyager GT (32 GB) ($64.99 direct, 4 stars) or the Kingston DataTraveler R500 ($200 street, 3.5 stars), its plastic enclosure isn't rugged enough to withstand the bumps and bruises of a backpack full of textbooks. It would be wiser to stick it in your pocket or, thanks to the hole in the tip of the drive, on your keychain. On the plus side, the design means that the SanDisk Ultra is slim enough to use without blocking adjacent USB ports.

If purchased directly from SanDisk, the drive comes with a steep price tag; the 32GB model sells for $2.66 per gigabyte, considerably higher than both the Corsair Flash Voyager GT and the Kingston DataTraveler R500, as well as the Verbatim Store 'n' Go Pro USB Flash Drive (64GB) ($117 street, 4 stars). However, the SanDisk Ultra is available for $22.40 on Amazon, or 70 cents per gigabyte.

Features and Performance
The SanDisk Ultra (32GB) was a slow performer in our timed file transfer tests. Though SanDisk claims the drive has a write speed of 10MBps, it clocked in at 6.52MBps, although it exceeded the advertised read speed of 15MBps by performing at 21.21MBps. Still, the SanDisk Ultra is squarely at the bottom of the pack compared with other USB 2.0 flash drives. It was outpaced by both the Verbatim Store 'n' Go Pro (12MBps write, 22MBps read) and the Kingston DataTraveler R500 (21MBps write, 30MBps read). If speed is your highest priority, you'd be better off with the Kingston DataTraveler Ultimate 3.0 Generation 2 (32GB) ($80 street, 4 stars), a USB 2.0 drive that also yielded much quicker performance over USB 2.0 (32.1MBps read, 28MBps write).

Preinstalled software on the SanDisk Ultra takes up a little over 60MB of space, though none of it is critical for the drive's operation and can accordingly be deleted. Included is Club SanDisk, a forgettable software suite that includes an eBay toolbar for Internet Explorer 8; a 60-day trial of McAfee; the RoboForm password manager; and GoToMyPC, a mobile access point for your PC or Mac. Also included on the drive is SanDisk's software encryption program, Secure Access, which lets you store your files in a "vault," or a password-protected folder.

Although it's not the flashiest of flash drives, its high capacity and thin profile make the SanDisk Ultra (32GB) a fine choice for everyday use. If the protection that the Editors' Choice Kingston DataTraveler Locker+ provides isn't absolutely imperative and ruggedness and speed aren't your top priorities, then it gets a (fully attached) thumbs up.

COMPARISON TABLE
Compare the SanDisk Ultra (32GB) with several other flash drives side by side.
