AlexandriaNews - 2012 Del Ray House And Garden Tour

Print?Print

The 2012 Del Ray House and Garden Tour is pleased to announce the 12 homes that will be featured on the May 19 tour:

308 East Hume ? Extensive termite damage required a complete ?redo? of this farmhouse dating from the 1800?s and the opportunity to add a family room and attic dormers.

306 East Hume ? The current owners started with smoking sludge on the walls, dangerous wiring, rickety staircases, dead-bolted makeshift doors and wallpaper over window screens.

309 East Hume ? An outdoor spiral staircase, a screened-in-porch, storage nooks, yard art, and bedrooms to delight the heart of any little girl.

2600 DeWitt ? Look for a floating glass staircase and a master bathroom inspired by one this couple saw on their honeymoon in South Africa.

2607 DeWitt ? This owner/builder added large pocket doors, a wainscoted billiards room, custom-built china cabinets and a majestic wood-burning fireplace to what was a 1920?s bungalow.

2500 Leslie - Built on the existing foundation in 2008 this craftsman style classic is the newest house on the tour with a wrap-around porch, detailed custom moldings and iron work, and reclaimed lumber.

2501 Terrett ? 1930?s ordinary transformed into 2012 extraordinary with vaulted ceilings and a wall of windows, all done by local craftsmen.

11 East Windsor ? Whether installing central heat or a new kitchen or two new baths, this homeowner has worked hard to maintain the character and integrity of her 1920?s farmhouse,

400 East Howell ? A one-time home for railroad workers, this is a flight of fancy with personal art pieces, family antiques, fabulous thrift store finds and recycled items.

406A East Howell ? Don?t let the exterior fool you.? This is a must see example of what can be done on with a classic brick duplex from the 40?s ? on a budget and with eco-friendly materials.

2001 La Grande ? This folk Victorian was built in 2006 with four floors of living space and a grand outdoor oven.

506 East Windsor ? A brick Sears and Roebuck mail-order house with a country music history that will simply make you happy, inside and out!

The tour is a biannual project of the Del Ray Citizens Association, and serves as a fundraiser for neighborhood projects as well as a showcase for local homeowners.

This year proceeds from ticket sales will support the Alexandria Scholarship Fund and landscaping at the ?Tot Park? at the corner of Commonwealth and Oxford.

Tickets are $15 in advance and may be purchased online at?www.delraycitizen.org at the Farmers Market starting in late April.? Day- of-tour tickets are $20.

The self-guided tour runs from 11:00am to 5:00pm, rain or shine.

Volunteers are welcome.

Hands-on with Edgewater's WiFi3

Image

Edgewater may not be a familiar name for even the most tech savvy, but its WiFi3 chipset is poised to propel the wireless industry beyond the limits of traditional access point tech. Aiming to leap past the low power solutions provided by the likes of Cisco, the company's developed a proprietary standard that delivers multiple channels per radio -- three channels over 2.4GHz in the showfloor demo -- versus the typical single channel currently employed. The chipset's not necessarily an end consumer product as it's intended for use by carriers, enterprise and ISPs, but it does stand to clear up the clutter when network congestion gets unwieldy. Check out our galleries below for a closer look at the outfit's next gen step in wireless infrastructure.

HTC Rezound gets yet another Ice Cream Sandwich leak

Rezound

This should be old hat by now -- an ICS ROM has leaked out for the HTC Rezound. Just like the last leak, and the one before that, and the one before that, you need to either be S-Off or completely stock to load it, and this go 'round it brings new radios, and (you won't like this part) takes away the hidden dialer menu. That means if you've been using the Rezound on T-Mobile or AT&T, you'll want to stay far away from this leak, and likely the official update when it comes around. If you're rockin' the Rezound and wanna give it a look, hit the source links.

Matt Fiddes, Former Michael Jackson Bodyguard, Says MJ Tried to Have Brother Randy Killed

Michael Jackson's former bodyguard Matt Fiddes claims that the late King of Pop once tried to have members of his inner brother kill Randy Jackson.

His brother, not the portly American Idol personality of the same name.

In the interview with The Sun (UK), Fiddes claims that Michael was intensely paranoid and "caught in a war with his brothers for years, They were all desperate to sign him up to a $500 million deal for a Jackson 5 reunion tour."

Fiddes explained that the eccentric Michael eventually grew fearful of his sibling.

"Things reached a head when Randy was trying to force his way past the bodyguards to speak to him in one of his rented homes. Michael ordered him to be shot."

Of course, no one shot Randy, who is alive and (presumably) well right now.

Fiddes adds, "[Michael] was out of mind on drugs and luckily Randy was OK."

"Randy was so scared he got on the phone and threatened to call the press. He told the bodyguards, 'If you shoot me the whole world will know about it.'"

Fiddes also claims MJ despised Madonna and poked holes in a Voodoo doll of Steven Spielberg. None of his accusations have been corroborated.

Karl Marx: 10 great quotes on his birthday

May 5 marks the birthday of Karl Marx. Best known as the author of "Capital" and, with Freidrich Engels, the "Communist Manifesto," Marx provided the intellectual foundation for an array of regimes that at one time governed nearly half of Earth's population.

These regimes were, for many, a long nightmare of state terror, genocides, deportations, extrajudicial executions, forced labor, and artificial scarcity, crimes that left tens of millions of people dead and deprived many more of basic dignity.?

But while Marx's solutions are widely and rightfully condemned, his analysis still resonates among workers and intellectuals alike around the world. As much of the globe struggles to extricate itself from an economic slowdown that many believe was created by the excesses of what Marx called "the bourgeoisie," several Marxist concepts ? the anarchic nature of capitalism, the parasitism of the financial class, and the reserve army of the unemployed, to name a few ? appear to take on new relevance.?

Here are 10 quotations from Marx. Let us know which ones you like best, and add your favorites that didn't make it into the list in the comments below.

- Eoin O'Carroll,?Staff

1. On 'the 99 percent'

"You are horrified at our intending to do away with private property. But in your existing society, private property is already done away with for nine-tenths of the population; its existence for the few is solely due to its non-existence in the hands of those nine-tenths."?(From "The Communist Manifesto," 1848)
