Speaking to reporters on his plane en route to a weeklong trip in the region, Panetta said he will urge countries here to find a way to peacefully resolve their problems. He arrived Sunday in Tokyo, the first stop of his trip.

"I am concerned that when these countries engage in provocations of one kind or another over these various islands that it raises the possibility that a misjudgment on one side or the other could result in violence and could result in conflict and that conflict would then, you know, have the potential of expanding," Panetta said.

The defense chief said his conversations with the Japanese and Chinese would echo what US Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton told them earlier this month ? that they must find a process for settling the disputes. The US, he said, does not take a position with regard to the disputed lands.

He said he will strongly urge the Chinese to participate in the process so they can take part in a forum to resolve the issues.

Violent protests against Japan erupted across?China?this weekend over uninhabited islands. Although Japan has controlled the islands ? called Diaoyu in Chinese and Senkaku in Japanese ? for decades, the Chinese were angry that the Japanese government purchased the East?China?Sea?islands from their private owners.

China?saw the purchase as an affront to its claim and as further proof of Tokyo's refusal to negotiate over them.

There also have been recent flare-ups over territorial battles between?China?and many of its other neighbors, as well as between Japan and?South?Korea.

Japan and?South?Korea are at odds over an islet claimed by both, and?China?stoked anger over its increasingly assertive stance regarding its claims over resource-rich waters to the?south?and east.

"We're going to face more of this," Panetta said. "The countries are searching for resources, there [are] going to be questions raised as to who has jurisdiction over these areas."

This will be Panetta's third trip to Asia in 11 months, reflecting the Pentagon's ongoing shift to put more military focus on the Pacific region. The trip will also include a stop in New Zealand.

Panetta's visit to Japan is also likely to include discussions about the deployment of V-22 Ospreys there. Thousands of people have protested the hybrid aircraft's planned use, saying they are unsafe.

The Pentagon plans to deploy 12 of the aircraft, which take off and land like a helicopter but fly like a plane. US officials have assured Japanese leaders the Ospreys are safe.

Polish Sports | Secret Natural Beauty Tips

The popular sports in Poland are both a source of recreation as well as tourist attractions. Amid the scenic beauty of Poland, the main sports are hiking, skiing, horseriding, swimming, and canoeing.

The Polish are ardent lovers of sports. There are many sports clubs and organizations that work to promote particular sports. They have a passion for football, and this is clearly visible in the number of football tournaments organized at the school, college, and club level. The roads are deserted whenever there is a broadcast of an important football match.

The fascination with sports can also be observed by the fact that Poland has been a venue for many of the international sporting events. Many of its athletes have won accolades, and the boxers Jerry Kulej and Zbigniew Pietrzykowski have won laurels at the Olympics. The famous Polish athlete, Adam Malysz, won the championship for ski-jumping in 2001. Poland also flaunts Irena Kirszenstein Szewinska, who won seven Olympic medals between 1964 and 1980.

Poland has gained international recognition for soccer and football. Speedboat and speedway racing are the other sports in which Poland has made its distinctive mark. Poland abounds in natural beauty, and there are many sports aligned to the abundance. The beauty of the outdoors doubles the excitement and enthralls tourists, drawing them to Poland in large numbers.

Hiking and skiing are popular sports, as the mountainous terrain serves as the ideal ground for the sports. The lakes in the northern part and the Baltic beaches are the popular locations for fishing, canoeing, and a number of the water sports. Sports in Poland are used to promote tourism, leading to the concept of travel sport. Sports form an integral part of the Polish lifestyle, contributing to the national prestige and the national economy.

Britain?apologizes over 1989 soccer disaster

Children lay floral tributes at a memorial to the victims of the 1989 Hillsborough soccer disaster at Anfield stadium after the publication of the independent report into the incident on Sept. 12, 2012.

By ITV News and Reuters

LONDON ? Britain?s government apologized Wednesday after an independent report said there had been failures and cover-ups in the wake of the 1989 Hillsborough soccer disaster in which 96 spectators died after a crowd crush.

There were gasps from lawmakers as Prime Minister David Cameron announced the findings of the report, which marked the culmination of a 23-year campaign the families of victims of Britain's worst sporting disaster.

"On behalf of the government, and indeed our country, I am profoundly sorry,? Cameron said, adding: "It was wrong that the families have had to wait for so long - and fight so hard - just to get to the truth."

The victims died in an overcrowded fenced-in enclosure at the Hillsborough stadium in Sheffield, northern England, minutes prior to the start of a match between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest.

It was a tragedy that changed the face of soccer in Britain and ushered in a new era of modern, all-seated stadiums. Britain was shocked by harrowing images of young fans crushed against metal fences, bodies lying on the pitch and spectators using wooden placards as makeshift stretchers on a warm spring afternoon.

The report concluded police had sought to blame the Liverpool fans, portraying them as aggressive, drunk and ticketless and bent on packing into the already crowded stadium.

"The tragedy should never have happened," the report's authors said in a statement. "There were clear operational failures in response to the disaster and in its aftermath there were strenuous attempts to deflect the blame onto the fans."

Senior police edited their officers' witness statements from the day to paint them in a less damaging light, the report said. Their emergency response was flawed and badly organized.

While inquiries found hooliganism played no part in the disaster, the police crowd management plan was preoccupied with preventing disorder, the report said.

Liverpool fans had been tainted by the Heysel stadium disaster in Belgium in 1985. Fighting inside that stadium led to Juventus fans being crushed against a wall that collapsed. Six Liverpool fans and 33 supporters of the Italian team died.

The real danger at Hillsborough lay in the emergency services' poor planning and a stadium that failed to meet minimum safety standards, the report said. Its capacity was overstated and previous crushes at Hillsborough had been ignored.

The disaster is still an open wound in Liverpool, the port city of nearly half a million people that is passionate about soccer and has fielded players such as Kevin Keegan, Kenny Dalglish and Steven Gerrard.

All the victims during the FA Cup semi-final between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest, held at the neutral ground of Sheffield Wednesday, were Liverpool supporters.

Trevor Hicks, of the Hillsborough Family Support Group, said: "We feel vindicated... We have had all sorts of accusations thrown at us over the 23 years." He added: "If today says one thing to the world, we are vindicated in our search for the truth."

In the aftermath of the disaster, a government spokesman incensed families by blaming the disaster on drunken fans. The report found no reason for the coroner's decision to take blood alcohol samples from all of the victims, including children. "The pattern of alcohol consumption among those who died was unremarkable," the report said. "The weight placed on alcohol levels was... inappropriate and misleading."

The disaster was also one of the low points for Rupert Murdoch's British newspaper group, currently reeling from a phone hacking scandal that has led to criminal charges against former senior executives and reporters. Its tabloid title, The Sun, accused Liverpool fans of stealing from the dying, urinating on policemen and beating up an officer who was attempting to resuscitate a victim. The newspaper's executives have since apologized for the story, which was found to be untrue. The editor at the time, Kelvin MacKenzie, apologized again on Wednesday - although his words were unlikely to end a long-standing boycott of the newspaper by consumers in Liverpool.

The Hillsborough Independent Panel, headed by the Bishop of Liverpool Rt. Rev. James Jones, was set up in 2010 to oversee the release of thousands of previously unseen documents related to the incident.?

Molecular switches in the cellular power plants: Researchers discover a new basic principle of the architecture of mitochondria

ScienceDaily (Sep. 12, 2012) ? A team of scientists at the University of Freiburg led by Dr. Martin van der Laan has achieved groundbreaking new insights into the structure of mitochondria. Mitochondria are the microscopic power plants of the cell that harness the energy stored in food, thus enabling central life functions.

This conversion of energy takes place in delicately formed cavities of the biological membranes inside mitochondria. Defects in these fine membrane structures can lead to severe diseases of the muscles and the central nervous system. A sophisticated molecular machine of the inner membrane that the Freiburg team already discovered in 2011 is not only responsible for forming the characteristic structures within mitochondria but evidently also plays an important role in assembling the outer membrane enclosing these organelles, as the scientists now report in the renowned journal Molecular Biology of the Cell.

The protein machine studied by the scientists is essential for maintaining the typical architecture inside the mitochondria and have thus received the name "Mitochondrial Inner Membrane Organizing System" (MINOS). In their latest study, the Freiburg researchers and their colleagues in Graz, Austria, Warsaw, Poland, and Groningen, Netherlands, demonstrate that the role of MINOS in creating the mitochondrial architecture is clearly more extensive than previously assumed. In a joint research effort between the Collaborative Research Center 746 and the Cluster of Excellence Centre for Biological Signalling Studies (BIOSS), Dr. Maria Bohnert, Lena-Sophie Wenz and Ralf Zerbes found out how MINOS connects the distinct membrane systems of the mitochondria with each other.

The membrane complexes SAM and TOM play a key role in this process. They use tunnel-shaped structures to transport proteins into the mitochondrion and then embed them in the outer membrane. In their latest study, the Freiburg scientists demonstrate that the MINOS component Fcj1 of the Mitofilin protein family participates directly in this process, which is essential for the survival of the cells. The inactivation of Fcj1 inhibits the integration of proteins into the mitochondrial outer membrane.

These findings show how molecular switches affecting the connectivity of mitochondrial membranes control the assembly and function of the cellular power plants. These newly gained insights improve our understanding of the basic principles of the architecture of mitochondria. In the future they could help scientists to understand and influence mechanisms of diseases that involve changes in the fine structure of mitochondria.
